so this was the day that we went to the slums where Antipas lived for three years when he and Jacinta met in 2004. I wanted to meet more children and hear more stories – we were supposed to go to some of the schools in that area but the teachers were on strike so the ones that would have been at school, were roaming around at home.
here is the video from day twelve – sorry it is dark, I should have done it inside that night :) (you can tell I am getting less pedantic about redoing the videos after day 12!!)
if you can’t view it for some reason, head on over and view it here on You Tube.
it is hard to describe the slum areas. Imagine dirt roads, mud brick huts, lots of dust, children running around doing their own thing. Driving past three to four people on a picky picky (motorbike), women walking with huge heavy items on their heads.
On this particular day, I decided I wanted a different view so sat in the boot of the tuk tuk facing outwards. Just a little bit dangerous…. and one very bruised and battered girl after that journey! :)
this might give you an idea of the landscape these people live in.
executive prime hotel – welcome.
kids rolling tyres is a very common sight.
this is Mama Joele – from Anti’s old ‘hood. She has eight grandchildren living in the compound – one grand daughter living in her home with her – she makes a living running the fruit and vege stand down on the corner. She was a lovely woman who welcomed us into her home and who valued photographs like they were treasure – I will definitely be making sure she gets this one as well as the ones I took of her grand-daughter.
here are some of the kids from Anti’s old ‘hood, always ready for a photo. I tried to catch them unawares to get a more natural photo but there’s always one ready for me! They are outside the house that Jacinta and Antipas rebuilt when rain and wind knocked it down years ago and the woman living there had nowhere to go.
despite their hardships, the Kenyan people welcome you into their homes and will sit and tell you about themselves, without question or suspicion.
if you are interested in attending the exhibition, please register your interest here, to make sure you are on the invite list.
have a great day,
