A photography basics tutorial showcasing straightforward steps to help you use your digital camera on manual and capture the moments that matter!

This Week: A Quiet Portrait

Photography Basics How To Take A Quiet Portrait

How to Take This Photo At Home

  • Lens: EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM – @ 70mm focal length
  • ISO: 500
  • f /: 3.5
  • Shutter speed:  1/500 sec
  • Lighting: evening inside
  • Time of day: about 10.30am
  • Where was I:  at her eye level in front
  • Other notes: focusing on the eyes makes your image really pop – remember to do this every time with a portrait!

Try It For Yourself!

WEEKEND TASK: A beautiful portrait can be just perfection by keeping it simple without the huge smiles, just letting the eyes tell the story of the person. This shy girl’s eyes told me so much. This weekend, take the time to take a still, quiet portrait like this of someone, whether it is your child or a friend. Convert to black and white for extra pop.

Have fun with this one!
