I have had quite a few people asking me lately when the best time is to photograph babies, so I thought I’d write a post on it in case anyone else is wondering!
Obviously I think that ANYTIME is a good time to have portraits taken of your family. I truly believe that photographs have the beautiful ability to freeze moments and people in time. Moments that might be otherwise forgotten. Moments that every mother tells me pass by so quickly.
In this post I’ll cover the best times in the first 12 months… As all babies are different, it is more important to base your shoots around milestones rather than age.
The best time to photograph newborns is in their first ten days. This is when they are still very sleepy and curled up and their skin is beautiful and soft. This is when you can shots like this
This photo was taken on the mum’s bed at home with the heater on really high (and it was November in Sydney) – we were sweating but this little munchkin was happy and content (just like we want em). She was 6 days old.
Obviously because you may not know when exactly to book in for your newborn shoot, you would normally book a session with me for around your due date and then we would confirm a day between 5-12 days after the birth of your baby (so make sure to add me to your announcement text list!). You will be tired and probably feel like you are in a haze, but I’ll come to you, we’ll take our time and work around feeds and burping, nappy changes and cuddles, so she is happy and sleepy and content. Because we want the baby to be nice and settled, newborn shoots tend to take as long as they take (sometimes 3-4 hours). It will be so worth having this very fleeting time captured.
tummy time and smiles (usually 3-5 months)
the next stage that is great for photos is when you baby becomes smiley and giggly and more animated in front of the camera. Usually this is around the 3-4 month stage but might be earlier or later. They are usually able to hold their head up pretty well without getting too tired and can love having tummy time, so this is a great way to get fantastic shots of your baby. usually I tell people to wait just that extra month or so until the baby is sitting up (even for a few seconds) on their own so you can get lots of variety, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get gorgeous images at this age! I especially love mum and baby shots at this age as interacting with them is usually when you get the smiles.
(towels are a great ‘prop’ to remember to use as well!)
sitting up, laughing, my favourite age! (usually 5-8 months)
I really love this age to photograph – happy little vegemites that nothing more than some singing and clapping hands can create the happiest smiles :) This is the age that your baby can sit on their own, they have lots of different expressions and love their hands and feet (the only downside to this age is trying to get a shot without a hand shoved in their mouth!) I always have wipes on hand for this age as well, as there will definitely be dribbles and toothy grins! Love love just gorgeous. This is also a great age to get portraits as they stay (relatively) still!
crawling, holding on to things and pulling themselves up (around 9-10 months)
at this age, we have lots of movement and lots of pulling up onto lounge chairs and whatever else they can hold onto! They tend to be quick little crawlers so I have to be fast!
walking! (10-12 months)
what better reason to celebrate with family portraits than their first birthday :) and even better if they are walking by then… even if they aren’t able to by themselves, we can always get shots of them holding mum and dads hands which is always gorgeous :) I usually spend these sessions running around after them and getting the shot as I go!!
