I met these two individually, a long time ago… the husband from school… the wife from a student exchange trip to America when we were seventeen. Time goes by, life goes on, you lose touch with people… Good old Facebook reconnected us and a mutual love of photography reunited the friendship :)
When I saw that these guys were having a baby on Facebook (pretty sure I ‘liked’ their announcement and maybe threw in a “congratulations guys, well done!” comment), I had no idea of what a treasured gift this baby was for them, or what a journey they had been through together to get to this point. Seven rounds of IVF and three years of heartache and wondering… tentative hopefulness finally turning into pure love and joy.
being the amazing and understanding wife of a photographer, I suggested to this mum-to-be that we do a night time maternity shoot for something different. I love getting out and doing shoots with no pressure and for no reason except because it is fun. I honestly feel that my best images have resulted from days like that. Only problem was, the weather kept getting in our way and I was very aware that due date was coming soon!!! we finally coordinated the weather and ourselves and made our way at about 9pm into pitch black national park somewhere down south. Small issue… On the way out in the car, Nene tells me that she actually thought she went into labour earlier in the week and had been sent home to be on bed rest… it only dawned on me then, that we were possibly cutting it slightly fine with this night-time-shoot-in-the-middle-of-nowhere malarky!!!
we had a bit of fun and played around with the light…
Two days after our night time adventure, their precious bundle arrived…
Photographing a photographer’s family is more than a little nerve-wracking! But we had a calm, relaxed, gorgeous shoot with their adored little baby girl. Here she is at 12 days old – beautiful eyelashes, beautiful little babe.
if you are family or friends of these guys and want to help them to win a boutique designer album of their entire session, head over to the blog and vote in the Year in Review contest! Everyone who votes goes into the draw to win a photoshoot with me plus print credit too :) voting closes 31st January 2013, so go do it now!
Steve also shoots brilliant landscape photography and taught me much of what I know about how to shoot landscapes, so you should definitely head over to his Facebook page and follow him there and get his daily dose of beautiful imagery!
have a great rest of your week,
